Our Next Event

Visit to Edinburgh of Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia, 27-29 May 2016.

Event: An Evening with Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia.

Title: The Spirituality of the Philokalia.
Chair: Fr. Alexander Williams of St Nicholas Community in Dunblane.
Venue: Sanctuary, Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EL.
Date: Friday 27 May 2016.
Time: Registration: 6.30pm-7pm. Event: 7pm-9pm.
Event Description: The Philokalia, first published at Venice in 1782, is one of the key texts in the history of modern Orthodoxy. It contains ascetic and mystical writings from the 4th to the 15th century, dealing with the path of prayer - especially the Jesus Prayer - and the encounter face-to-face between the human person and the living God.  We shall consider how all spiritual life is founded upon the Sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist.

Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia taught Orthodox theology in the University of Oxford during 1966-2001. He is an assistant bishop in the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, and a member of the monastic Brotherhood of St John the Theologian on the island of Patmos. He has written extensively on the Jesus Prayer, and he is co-translator of the English version of The Philokalia. He is also the author of The Orthodox Church (Penguin Books) and The Orthodox Way (St Vladimir's Seminary Press).
